Week #19 Letter
Hey guys!
Some quick summaries for the week:
2-8-16
"These are not the droids you're looking for." Preparation day! Today
it was snowing all day but not too hard, just flakes. We first did our
laundry and then went to a candy store her in Flushing. Got some
Japanese candy. It's really good. Then went to the mall and got some
shirts at Nike Clearance store. I got a 49ers and Patriots shirt for
me and one from my dad as well. Hopefully he got his package before
reading this... Then we went to Bed Bath and Beyond and I got another
pillow. Then Target, got a few things, and dropped that off. Went to
Hunan Kitchen for lunch and then went to the church. Played some ping
pong till mom got online to email but something was wrong with the
servers again or something cause I didn't receive any emails for an
hour. I finally turned off my email and turned it back on and then I
started getting all the emails once again. Weird. After emails, dinner
and went to a members home and had a family home evening there. It was
really nice and peaceful. Came back to Flushing and contacted by
Dunkin hoping to find new investigators to teach. #FTiF
2-9-16
"Do, or do not. There is no try." Today flew right by as soon as we
left. Studies and morning routine took forever. We left and went to
the church to plan our look ups for the day. Went and did a few then
went to lunch. Went to district meeting and it could have been our
last one together but not for sure. Went and did more of our lookups
and went to dinner. Went to the church and had a lesson with Adrian.
Then we asked him to stay for Jays lesson. He accepted and gave the
best input anyone can hope for. We are definitely inviting Adrian to
all future lessons with Jay. Did some seed planting after that and
went in for the night. Yeah.
2-10-16
"What a wonderful smell you've discovered, princess." The days are
getting harder. We are scraping the barrel looking for lessons and
trying to find people to teach. That and we are losing contact with
investigators and less actives every week. All of the sudden, we are
only scheduled to teach Jay, Adrian and Hill. That's not enough to to
fill our week. So this is starting to be the steep part of the hill
after an enjoyable ride down hill the past couple weeks. Time to grind
it out again and find new investigators through street contacting once
again. Takes like a hundred hours to get 1-2... Well today we did a
lot of look ups with hardly anyone answering. Once again, those that
answered either said they don't know the person we are looking for or
they moved. Perfect. We did teach Hill in the morning though. That was
all we did. Supper boring day and didn't feel like we accomplished
much.
2-11-16
"Flying is for droids." It was a boring day as it was freezing cold.
Even used some hand warmers today just to keep feeling in my hands. So
because it was cold, means no one wanted to stop and talk to us and no
one wanted to answer the door as it would let the cold air in... We
had no success today. Lots of look ups and contacting to just talk to
people. No one was stopping. We did do weekly planning but because we
haven't met with many people, it didn't take long. We also met with
Adrian today and we talked about temples and keeping the sabbath day
holy. Yeah, boring day.
2-12-16
"Luke, I am your father." It was a very good day today as we finally
hit our goal of planting 15 seeds in people. A seed is mentioning the
church and us as missionaries to someone not a member. Most people
don't want to talk so they don't say hi back and keep on walking. That
is why it is so hard to talk to people. Anyways, we had a lesson with
Hill this morning, went well as we addressed a concern she had. Then
went to lunch and had Zone Training Meeting. It was a great meeting as
I felt like I learned so much from it. They had workshops on Studies,
Planning, Teaching, and Willing Heart. Then went and visited a
referral we got today. It ended up being a recent convert that just
moved to New York from Cali and she didn't want to bother the Spanish
elders(whom she has been working with) about receiving another Book of
Mormon so she just self referred herself. That was really funny. The
went to a handoff lesson with the Korean sisters but as history
repeats itself, didn't happen. That is number 12 now that didn't
happen of handoff lessons. I'm never meant to have a handoff lesson as
everyone else in the zone has had one. Wow. Then went contacting till
Pizza Hut for dinner. Went to the church and made the coordination
sheet and contacted till coordination. After coordination, went
contacting to finish off the goal of 15. We barely made it as we were
walking home with 13 and talked to everyone we could to get 15. We did
it! Yay:)
2-13-16
"Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." Today was a weird day.
First off it was -8 degrees during the night with the wind chill. We
got an email from Jay saying as the night goes on, we might be hitting
a new record low of temp. That's crazy!! We be breakin records out
here! Then earlier, we had apartment checks and I was surprised at how
thorough it was. Like they were saying things I've never heard of and
washing this and that that I never knew could be washed or needed it.
I thought we had a pretty good apartment, but nope. We got work to do.
I can only imagine other apartments since they said ours was the
cleanest they've seen... Yikes. Then we actually had a handoff lesson
with the Korean sisters!!! Number 13 was the breaker. The investigator
is named Nira and now elder Mitchell and I get to teach her and she
sort of accepted a baptismal invitation already so... Maybe. No date
yet but we meet Friday, if we are still here after transfers. Then a
member came in half way through. He knows elder Mitchell and they set
it up for him to come in. I've never met him before but he attends the
Richmond Hill Branch not in our area but he lives in our area in
College Point. Weird. Richmond Hill was Elder Mitchell's last area so
that's how they know each other. After the lesson, we went with the
member and he bought us lunch and we talked for a bit afterwards. He
is very knowledgeable about the scriptures. He was giving insights so
deep from one scripture, it felt like an entire lesson. That was
crazy. Then we went and tried to visit some members but they weren't
home. Went to the church and prepared for our lesson with Adrian. We
talked about the commandments with him and helped him know what to say
to be a member missionary. Then he told us he is giving a talk
tomorrow in sacrament meeting!!! Not even a member a month and already
giving a talk. He's growing up so fast. Haha:) that's all.
2-14-16 Valentines Day!💐💝❤️
"Sugar! Yes please! Won't you come and put it down on me. I'm here,
cause I need, a little love a little symphony..."
"May the force be with you, always"
Had to finish off the theme for the week. Hope you all like Star Wars.
Cause I do.
Today was a fun day. It's a holiday and I love holidays in the mission
field. We did some contacting at Dunkin but it was the coldest day in
like the past 20 years members were saying. It was 7 degrees average
today with a -16 degree wind chill. That's cold! We lasted a half an
hour at Dunkin till we had to go in. Went and made some calls and then
had lunch. Went to church and gave the closing prayer in sacrament,
the lesson in gospel doctrine, and helped with the Melchizedek
priesthood class. Pretty full day. Hill, Jay, Asai family, and the
Esteva family all brought food for us and the Estevas have more to
give tomorrow. Hill got us cupcakes, Jay brought some of his cabbage
he cooks for us to try, very healthy he says, Asai's gave us a frozen
pizza and dessert, and the Estevas gave us a milk and the rest will be
tomorrow. Lots of food! We ate the frozen pizza at the church as our
oven doesn't work and we ate it with the Spanish elders. Then went to
visit referrals but none answered the door. Yeah, fun day and lots of
yummys!
So with the people we are working with:
We need to get in contact with a few people but we have a lot of
lessons set up for this week so hopefully I stay. Tomorrow is transfer
calls. I'll let you know in this email.
Hill and Adrian are great. Adrian gave a talk on the Word of Wisdom so
I don't know if we even need to teach him that one again. John we need
to get in contact with again. Just waiting on him, we have done all we
can. Katalin we set up a lesson for this week and Daniel has dropped
off the face of the earth. Valerie has a time set for Tuesday night
and Albert is tomorrow! This week we have 8 lessons already set up
from today's calls and set ups. So fun!!!
Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Presidents Day everyone! I love you
all and I will see you in the next email! Bu-bye!!!

Week #18 Letter
Happy Chinese New Year everyone! It is the year of the monkey for
those of you who don't know.
Some summaries for ya:
2-1-16
"I'm hooked on a feeling! I'm high on believing, that you're in love
with me. Yeah, I'm hooked on a feeling!" Preparation day! We got a
late start as elder Mitchell had to get money for laundry and he did
that after studies so we were 2 hours late to getting going. But we
ate from the cheap bun place around the corner for elder Mitchell's
first time. He loved it. Then we did our regular shopping route of
Urban Terrain, 99 cents stores, Nike clearance store, adidas,
marshals, Best Buy, target. Sometimes we get stuff from the other
stores but it is mostly just checking to see if they have any good
deals. Then we went to the church and emailed and played some ping
pong. After preparation, we went to visit the branch president to sign
the baptismal forms as he wasn't there yesterday. He wasn't home so we
went and contacted until we went to the church to have a lesson with
Adrian. We showed the full restoration video to him to help him
understand the first vision and its significance. It was a fun movie
night I other words:)
2-2-16
"Come and get your love! Come and get your love!" Don't literally come
and get your love, that would be awkward... But we got call from Hill
this morning and she wanted to meet today so we did. Not sure why but
she felt prompted she said. And then we are meeting tomorrow as
originally planned. Had some lunch then met with Jay. It was so much
better today and how we actually answered a lot of his questions
before he could go on like he likes to do. He said we teach in a whole
different way than he thinks so it takes time for him to come to grasp
with it but I think he is starting to progress a little again. Had
district meeting and then went to Fresh Meadows and did some look ups
there and ate dinner at Arby's. Tried visiting Robert but he was busy
and so went to the church and met with the branch president to get our
baptismal forms signed. Then contacted at Dunkin to end the day.
2-3-16
"Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch cherry bomb! Cherry bomb! Today was pretty good. We
had a lesson with Hill and we went over the first lesson. Had some
lunch and did deep clean. Rearranged my desk to have the grey table as
my main desk now and it is so much nicer. Also threw away a ton of
things we don't need so now the apartment feels empty almost. Then we
went to John's and had a great lesson. He is getting excited about his
baptism which we didn't think he even remembered it. The date might be
moved as he might be moving apartments at that time. But I hope I'm
here next transfer! I want to see him get baptized. Then we had dinner
and I made tacos:) so good:) then did look ups around flushing. So
much walking and that was it.
2-4-16
"That's a spirit in the sky. That's where I'm gonna go when I die."
Pretty average day, we tried to set up a new way of knowing where
potential investigators are by printing out a map and manually writing
in where everyone lives. It took forever and didn't get that much
done. So we will see if it even works. Then some lunch and weekly
planning till dinner. We had dinner at 4, because we had a lesson at 5
with Daniel but he either wasn't home or didn't answer the door.
Someone was there, but they didn't want to answer the door... That
stinks. Then we went to Roberts and he wasn't home either. We waited
around to see if he would come home in 10 min but no one came so we
went back to flushing. Good thing we did too as there was some big
accident where there were 8 fire trucks, a couple ambulances and a
whole lot of police cars. All along the bus route so the buses were
stopped and couldn't get around so we had to walk a little bit to get
to the church in time for Adrian. We can always count on Adrian to
show up though. He had a question how to enter the temple so we had a
temple lesson. No we are on exchanges with Elders Householder and
Cisneros. Fun times!
2-5-16
"We are Groot." The exchange today was awesome. We had studies
together and went to the church and made the pasta Hill gave us and
had lunch. Split off and elder Householder and I went to College Point
to do some look ups. We were seed planting all day and got a few up
there. We visited a family that is actually in the Spanish elders pool
as well and ended up teaching them. They are super devoted Catholics
though so might be a little time. Then came back and went to Pizza Hut
for dinner and contacted on the streets for an hour and a half until
exchange review. During that time and from earlier, elder householder
and I planted a total of 26 seeds, breaking the record in our district
and the zone leaders pool. We were pretty happy. We work well together
but we also can get distracted talking to each other very easily. So
the challenge is focusing that on teaching others and talking that
way:) works to planting seeds.
2-6-16
"What has the galaxy ever done for you? Huh? Why do you want to save it?"
"Because I'm one of the idiots who lives in it!"
Pretty average day once again. We had studies and finished weekly
planning. Found a great talk from President Hinckley back in 1999
given in February in a special conference. You can find it in April
1999 conference section at the bottom. Really good. Then had some
lunch and did some look ups by queens college on the other side of
where we usually go. Then had dinner early to get to correlation at 5.
Then did some street contacting and street runs of walking up and down
the streets as we found that is more effective to talk to people. Then
had a lesson with Adrian and Freddy Lopez was a member present to it.
Really good, talked about plan of salvation and how the temples fit
into it now. Yeah.
2-7-16
"Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast, I would catch
it." Church day today and fast Sunday. Pretty hard fast as I was
starving before lunch time so that stunk today but whatever. Did some
lookups in the morning with the only success finding out that the
person we were looking for didn't live there anymore. Went to branch
council and talked about a lot we needed to. That was good. Then went
to church and then went to the Carpintero's for dinner. Did some
lookups around their home and went back to flushing. That's all folks!
So Hill and Adrian are preparing to go to the temple and John is
preparing for baptism soon. Trying to find more people to teach as we
are going to loose Hill and Adrian in a few weeks after we are done
teaching them. But we planted a total of 105 seeds this week as a
district so hopefully someone will want to learn more.
Love you all and I will see you in the next email! Bu-Bye!!!

are going to loose Hill and Adrian in a few weeks after we are done
teaching them. But we planted a total of 105 seeds this week as a
district so hopefully someone will want to learn more.
Love you all and I will see you in the next email! Bu-Bye!!!

Week #17 Letter
You missed me, didn't you? I know you did.
Another week has gone by and I feel like every other day is
preparation day now. Time is flying by and I have now been out for 4
months already. That's crazy. And especially this week as we had 2
exchanges and 2 baptisms.
Some little summaries of the day:
1-25-16
"Gus, don't be a gooey chocolate chip cookie." Preparation day! Yay.
Today was pretty fun. I got an adidas bag really cheap for future
exchanges and then went to the church and emailed. The email servers
were down for some and acting up. So half of the emails I received I
didn't get until after 6. It was so weird and confusing but I was able
to talk a little with the family and other missionaries weren't able
to email at all so I count myself lucky. Then we have exchanges with
the Spanish elders today with the new exchange system. Elder Cisneros
and I went to the Asai's family and shared a message with them
challenging them to find someone we can share our message with. Then
tried to go by Anthony's but he wasn't home so we came back and waited
for the other two to get back to do daily planning. Now we are all in
our small apartment as a district. District sleep over! Sort of! Haha
1-26-15
"Shoot me! Shoot me!"
"I'm holding you Shawn."
"Oh yeah."
Last night was so much fun as we all slept out in the big room on our
beds. We talked for a bit about cars. Normal elder stuff:) then today
we woke up and quickly took showers and had breakfast. Studies was
basically district meeting teaching one another and then we had lunch
and went to district meeting ironically. So it wasn't an exchange
until after district meeting when elder Cisneros and I went to teach a
recent convert named Vince who lives at the mental hospital place.
Vince isn't mental, he desperately wants to move, but we taught him
about missionary work. Then we went and visited a lady that fed us
last transfer and we returned her tupperware. Contacted at Dunkin
until dinner where we went to Darros pizza place. Exchanged back and
had a lesson with Adrian. Adrian told us he wants me to do the
baptism:) I am honored he chose me. I'm excited for Friday, it can't
come fast enough now. Of course for those of you reading this, it will
be a few lines down. Then we were going to have a handoff lesson with
the Korean sisters but history repeats itself and it didn't happen.
That is 10 times that a handoff lesson I've been apart of falls
through. Two happened when I was in the Spanish pool last transfer.
I'm not meant to have a handoff lesson that Korean sisters are trying
everything they can to not tell me the name of the person, not tell me
when it is but tell elder Mitchell, everything to see what it is that
makes these lessons not happen. It is so funny now. Sad, but
hilarious. So we contacted at Dunkin until we went in for the night.
We have exchanged with the zone leaders tomorrow:)
1-27-16
"Boom, boom, boom, muffins!"
Today was pretty great. We went to give a blessing to this member's
sister in a nursing home and later, we got a call saying she started
eating again after not eating for 2 weeks and was on life support 3
times. Then we had a lesson with Robert on Family History and we
finally started his family tree on family search so now he knows how
to do the basics and can do it on his own. Then we made some calls to
find someone to give a talk on baptism at Adrian's baptism but no luck
so far. Went to a lesson but he didn't show up so we ended up talking
to a guy on the street for that time. He is homeless and has had
humbling experiences, gave him a Book of Mormon and invited him to
read it. Went to the Asai Family's home for dinner and made more calls
at the church to potential investigators and then more members to find
someone to give a talk. No luck still. Now on exchanges with the zone
leaders:)
1-28-16
"Let's all do the chocolate dance, the chocolate dance, chocolate
dance. Everyone do the chocolate dance..." Exchanges were great:) we
had some great pillow talk till I fell asleep cause I was so tired.
But we all managed to fit in our tiny bedroom by playing a big game of
Tetris. Woke up and exercised and had breakfast. Studies were good and
then elder Ng and Mitchell left to go teach Hill. So elder Finch and I
went to New World mall for lunch and then went to the church to cut
fliers. We then went with a member to a traffic court so elder Finch
could help translate for him. We spent about 3 hours traveling there,
waiting and traveling back. Then went to a lesson up in College Point,
all in Chinese. Went to English Class they teach for free but we
didn't teach it, we greeted the people coming in and Elder Finch
interviewed Adrian for his baptismal interview. All is good! Baptism
is on. Then we had a lesson with an investigator and a member present,
in Chinese. So I sat there most of the time thinking. After that, we
taught some English to the member present during the lesson and had
exchange review with Elder Mitchell and Elder Ng. Came back and now
having dinner as I haven't had it yet today. I'm so hungry right now.
1-29-16
"Whaaaaaaaattt." To start off, the baptism of Adrian Dimetriou was a
success. We started the day with a lesson with Hill at the library and
talked about the baptismal interview questions. Then had lunch and
went to the church to fill the baptismal font. We had some troubles
getting the hot water started for a bit but then we got it and the
thermometer said the water was 111 degrees... Probably not right but
it was pretty close. The whole room was like a sauna in a couple
minutes. Then we worked on the programs and printed off our hand out
cards to make tomorrow. Then did some of our weekly planning session
until we had to get ready for the baptism. We went and got my clothes
and then went to Pizza Hut for dinner and took it back to the church
to eat. Got changed and waited till 6 for everyone to show up. No one
showed up except for Brother Wong(1st counselor), Hill, Jay, Zone
Leaders, Spanish Elders, Adrian's mother, and we skyped in our
investigator, John. After the baptism, brother Sanchez showed up and
gave his talk and some sisters showed up with refreshments, and we
didn't even ask them to bring them. That was a blessing. The water was
really warm, super nice, but then the air outside the room was not.
The bathroom was freezing standing there standing all wet. Overall, it
went great. Then afterwards, we socialized with Hill and everyone
else. Hill then went into her interview and elder finch needed someone
to come with him to a lesson so I went with him to be his companion
and then went to correlation afterwards. Went home after that:) pretty
great day, and we get to do it all over again tomorrow basically.
1-30-16
"Who goes through a Wendy's drive through after learning of a murder?"
Well, Hills baptism was a success as well today:) Two baptisms, two
days. Wow. So today we started off by opening the church for a member
to have piano lessons today and we got a huge cheese croissant and
chocolate energy drink with it. Super good though. Then we made the
program for Hill's baptism and made more pass along cards. Ate some
lunch and went to teach John. Taught faith only as he likes to talk a
lot, trying to figure out ways to teach him better. Then we went to
start filling up the font and finished our weekly planning session
today and then went to dinner. Went to the church and got read for the
baptism. It was so much better today with who showed up, we had
members, the Chinese missionaries brought 2-3 investigators, not for
sure how many but something like that, and other investigators of ours
came. Good turn out to where there weren't enough seats. The water was
also very warm and nice. Then we socialized afterwards and cleaned up.
Then we went out and planted seeds. We got 18 seeds planted today when
we were barely getting 5 a day. It was definitely a good day today.
1-31-16
Today was a good day. We made some calls
and contacted in the morning. Had some lunch and went to church. Elder
Mitchell confirmed both Hill and Adrian and they were very excited. We
taught gospel principles and started over with lesson 1. Then we went
and had dinner and went to white stone to visit some referrals. Then
came back home. Very simple day and not a whole lot of excitement
today.
So the snow is almost all the way melted compared to what it was last
weekend. The we also have some 50 degree weather days this week and
one in the high 50s so that will be nice:) looking forward to that:)
Love you all and I will see you in the next email. Bu-Bye!!
