Week #24 Talk in Church
Here is my talk from Sunday
Before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese pilots studied the
area and the targets they were assigned bomb. They were each given a
specific target. They went over the maps many, many times before
December 7, 1941. On the day of the bombing, it was a clear day.
Perfect for their raid of Pearl Harbor. As the fleet moved inward,
each was successful in destroying their target. All, except one who
was assigned to a plantation area. He lost direction because of a
cloud that covered this area and he could not see his target, The
Hawaiian Temple. When the fleet returned home, he was reprimanded and
after the war, he went back to Hawaii to see the target he missed and
why the Lord protected this certain building. He found out and the
result was that he joined the church with a testimony of the
importance of the temple. He had a testimony of the sacred edifice of
the temple.
I share this story with you to help you have a glimpse of what the
temple means to the Lord and how important it is for us to go to the
temple. The temple is the House of the Lord. Here, we receive some of
the most sacred covenants that we can make with God and we are blessed
immensely for them. We are blessed now and in the eternities for our
temple service. We receive blessings to help with our day to day life
and we receive exaltation in the Celestial kingdom in the next life.
We also perform the same sacred ordinances for our ancestors through
family history and taking their names to the temple. It says in D&C 2:
1 Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah
the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the
Lord.
2 And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made
to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their
fathers.
3 If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.
What a blessing it is to be able to participate in the salvation of
our family members and prepare for the coming of our Lord.
About 7 years ago, I was living outside of Boston, Massachusetts with
my family. There was a temple conference that February and so the
local wards and branches prepared by finding family names to take to
the temple during the conference. My grandfather was living in Utah at
the time but was visiting and wanted to attend the temple with us. My
mother gave him a family name she found that she could not do. Just
one. After the session, my grandfather turned to my mother and said
the name she gave him was meant for him. He gave his experience of how
weeks prior to that session, he kept thinking of that person's name.
He had no idea who they were or what to do with the name. But then
during the session, he read the card and realized who it was and the
connection it was to him. He grew closer to his ancestor that day by
helping them enter the celestial kingdom and gaining eternal life. I
know we can all grow closer to our ancestors as we participate in
their salvation through the temples.
The temple is the place where we feel closest to our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. Heaven is not far from us in the temple. The veil is
very thin at the temple and every time we go, we learn more of our
purpose in life and the importance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
While we are there, we are all equal. We are all dressed in white to
show our purity and cleanliness before the Lord. This is found in
Revelations 7:13-15 and it says:
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these
which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These
are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their
robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and
night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell
among them.
We need to be clean in thought, body and dress to enter the holy
temple. We enter the temple in our Sunday best and change in the
dressing room. We are given a locker to leave behind all of our cares,
concerns, and distractions both physical and emotional. We then dress
in white to be one with everyone and attend the session we are
participating in.
Young men and young women have the opportunity to do baptisms for the
dead. As we grow older, we have the opportunity to participate in the
other saving ordinances. We are washed and anointed, endowed and
sealed for time and all eternity. Endowed literally means a gift and
the temple endowment is a gift from God. It helps us focus on the
savior, His role in our Heavenly Father's plan and our commitment to
follow him. One way we show our commitment to follow Him is how we
wear the temple garment. As it says in True to the Faith:
The garment provides a constant reminder of the covenants you have
made in the temple. You should treat it with respect at all times...
When you wear it properly, it provides protection against temptation
and evil. Wearing the garment is an outward expression of an inward
commitment to follow the Savior.
Another temple ordinance is celestial marriage, in which husband and
wife are sealed together for time and all eternity. A sealing
performed in the temple continues forever if the husband and wife are
faithful to the covenants they make. The temple marriage is the
ultimate ordinance of the temple. Children born to parents that have
been sealed in the temple are born into the covenant. They
automatically become part of an eternal family. Those not born into
the covenant can participate in the ordinance of sealing the children
to the parents in the temple as well. As it says in Matthew 18:18:
18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be
bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
Families are sealed together for time and all eternity where time
cannot destroy and death cannot disrupt.
If you have received temple ordinances, always remember the covenants
you have made. Return to the temple as often as you can. If you are a
father or mother, teach your children the significance of the temple.
Help them prepare themselves to be worthy to enter the temple.
If you have not yet received temple ordinances, begin preparing yourself now.
Prepare by talking with the branch president to know what needs to be
done to enter the holy temple of the Lord. Learn what you can outside
the temple of the significance of the temple to prepare yourself
spiritually. Prepare now to be taught from on high in the temple.
Learning in the temple is not as easy as reading a book and studying
it. As Jesus Christ taught His disciples in a symbolic fashion, we are
also taught in a symbolic fashion in the temple. For example, baptisms
represent the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We go under the
water representing His death and we come up out of the water anew and
starting our new life committed to following our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. We are taught in a symbolic fashion when we enter the
temple. That is the whole purpose of temples. That is to teach, guide,
and bless those that enter in them.
Going to the temple is a blessing. It is a place of peace and
revelation. When you are troubled or when crucial decisions weigh
heavily on your mind, you may take your cares to the temple. There you
can receive spiritual guidance. As it says in D&C 128:15:
15 And now, my dearly beloved brethren and sisters, let me assure you
that these are principles in relation to the dead and the living that
cannot be lightly passed over, as pertaining to our salvation. For
their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul
says concerning the fathers--that they without us cannot be made
perfect--neither can we without our dead be made perfect.
Sometimes you may feel that you cannot think clearly because your mind
is so burdened with problems and the many things clamoring for
attention. In the temple, the dust of these distractions can settle,
the fog and haze can lift, and you can understand things that you have
not understood before. You can find new ways to deal with the
challenges you face.
The Lord will bless you as you attend to the sacred ordinance work in
the temple. And the blessings He gives you will not be limited to your
time in the temple. He will bless you in all aspects of your life.
Your labors in the temple will strengthen you and refine you
spiritually.
2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the
Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and
shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the
mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will
teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion
shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
Let us go to the temple, participate in the salvation of souls, and
receive the blessings in store for us. No work is more spiritually
refining. No work we do gives us more power. And no work require a
higher standard of righteousness than temple work.

Week #24 Letter
Hello my good friends!
This is coming on Wednesday due to temple trip today.
But some summaries of the day:
3-7-16
"Let's stop messing a pruned and call your boyfriend in tights, shall we?"
*chomp*
"Ahhhh!"
Preparation day! It was a good day. We had studies and laundry and put
the laundry away. Went and shipped off my packages of clothes I don't
use on the mission and shoes I need to get replaced, again. The
sidewalks here are so u even and I trip like every block. Then did our
shopping and this week we went to BJ's to get the $1.50 hot dog and
soda. That was lunch:) went to target and got our groceries, still got
$75 for the rest of the month. Pretty good so far! But still have 3
preparation days to get through. Went and took it home, went to the
church and played ping pong and emailed. Went and ate dinner and came
back to the church to meet the branch president there. He drove us to
a lesson and he came along as well. We met with James Staiti and
shared the Are We Christians Mormon message and got to know him a
little bit. He was honored the branch president came to see him. It
was awesome for president Reyes to be there. Then went back to
Flushing and did a look up on Northern Blvd by Taco Bell. Nothing so
we went home. #prepareday
3-8-16
"Was this my destiny? A dream life full of luxury and ... Apparently
no! Even gate picks its favorites." Today was a unique day. Lots of
things out of the ordinary. We had studies then a mission wide
conference call. President and Sister Reynolds gave a spiritual
thought as they no longer can at the transfer meetings/exchanges. They
talked on obedience as it is so important. Really, the commandments
are there to protect us not restrain us. Then had a lesson with Hill
at Dunkin. Pretty good lesson. Didn't get through everything we wanted
to but we now understand her point of view better. Then lunch, and
district meeting. During district meeting, we went and planted seeds
outside and went on splits. I went with Elder Householder and we only
talked to one person for the 15 min we did it. But that person was
interested and really friendly. Maybe.... After district meeting, we
went to John's and helped him rip up his carpet and padding as he has
moved out. We also helped pull up the nails and staples in his floor.
It was fun! Did it for an hour and a half. Then Joh. Drove us home and
had dinner. Then went to Murray Hills and knocked for an hour and
planted 20 seeds. Then went to Dunkin and contacted the rest of the
night. Unique day! Mission conference call, seed planting during
district meeting, and service! Also, I was in short sleeves today as
it was mid 60's today!!!:) #warmweather
3-9-16
"Can someone stamp my frequent kidnapper card?"
"Haha, you of all people should know we discontinued that promotion.
Chow chow all!"
"Same time next week?"
It was hot today! Hit 70s and will be warmer tomorrow! Yeah! Love it.
This morning we planted seeds and made calls. Lunch and did look ups
in College Point all afternoon with no success. Then ate dinner and
went down to Pomonok to have a lesson with Robert. He wasn't home.
Then tried visiting a referral. Not home either. Went back to flushing
and met hill. She gave us 7-11 doughnuts and talked for a sec. Then
she called my mom... What does the handbook say now soldier? (Dad
better get that one) They have been chatting for a while now on the
phone and emailing each other but never right in front of me. That was
weird. So close yet so far away. Didn't talk to her but I saw the
number Hill dialed and it was hers. It was legit. So we sat there for
a few minutes and realized she could talk all night so we went to
plant seeds and then she hung up. Talked for another minute then
planted seeds for the rest of the night. Pretty boring day but I'm
tired, sore, and hungry all the time now. #missionarylife
3-10-16
"Did you ever look back?"
"NO!"
"Ow! My giant blue head!"
A lot happened today! To start off, I finished the Book of Mormon
today! Second time reading it on the mission. I'll probably read D&C
next and then read the Book of Mormon again after that. Then after
studies we went to Dunkin to plant seeds and after 10 min, some
pastors from this Korean church came and started talking to us. They
were asking about how we find people to come to our church and a bunch
of missionary stuff. Then they said they want to take us to lunch
sometime. Ok then. We set up a time for Tuesday and they are super
nice. Kinda cool as they are interested in how we teach versus how
they teach others. Then they left and we went to a lesson with Jay.
Talked about the living beneath our privileges Mormon message. Then
ate lunch a don had weekly planning. We then went to Johns and taught
him about the Law of Chastity. It was a good lesson. Then he took us
out for dinner as thanks for helping him move. Went home and tried to
go up to Alberts but he cancelled on us so we went back down by Johns
home in Pomonok to Roberts to teach him. We taught him about the
Atonement and the Easter season. Good lesson. Then went to the church
and taught Adrian. We first talked about the temple and what to
expect. He is going Saturday. Then talked about the atonement with him
as well. Then got my packages I got from home and we went home. It was
a full day of work. #accomplished
3-11-16
"I didn't quite hear that last part, but it sounded important." I am
tired. Started off today with a lesson cancelled. No fun to start your
day. So we contacted by Dunkin until lunch. After lunch, went to Zone
Training Meeting and was instructed on obedience, and the new Easter
Initiative video, Hallelujah. It's a cool video I think. Just like A
savior is born. Then we finished our weekly planning and made our
coordination sheet. Went to Pizza Hut for dinner! And went to Brother
Staiti's for a lesson. The busses were super late so we only had a 30
min lesson and then it took us 45 min to get to coordination. We had
to run to catch a bus and cross a few streets to get to another bus.
So much running. Got there super late and gave our portion and
contacted by Dunkin till the end of the night. I am tired. #goodnight
3-12-16
"What does 'Titan' mean?"
"It was the only name I could trademark."
"Oh."
Pretty cool day. We started off with some contacting at Dunkin and
then went to meet Hill at the library but she ended up being over an
hour late in total as the trains were super delayed and the was a Mets
game at Citi Field today. Already the Mets are playing again. I was
here when they were in the World Series last year playing. I've been
in Flushing for forever! Anyways, the lesson was good, just read an
ensign article with her. Then she took us out to Applebee's for lunch.
Super good but took a while to get the food and eat it. So afterwards,
we went and did some lookups around flushing. Had a quick dinner and
went down to Fresh Meadows to do the lookups down there. No luck. Ugh.
So tired from so much walking down there. #sorelegsandback
3-13-16
"Oh you're a villain alright, just not a super one."
"Oh yeah, what's the difference?"
"Presentation!"
Today was a good day. After studies, we went to the church to download
the Easter initiative, Hallelujah, to start sharing. We are counting
how many new investigators we get out of it this time, not how many
times we share it. So we went contacting by Dunkin but weren't able to
share the video as we didn't download the Chinese one just yet. No
English people today. Then went to lunch and then church. I gave a
talk today in sacrament meeting on the temples. People afterwards were
commenting how it was the best temple talk they have ever heard. One
even wanted a copy of it. During 3rd hour, elder Mitchell and I went
to relief society with Hill to introduce it to her and during it, one
of the sisters gave her testimony and she even referenced to my talk
in it. I was honored but I don't feel like I deserve the praise. After
church, we went and ate dinner and went knocking in Murray Hills.
After 1/2 hour of no one talking to us, we went to visit a referral
instead. Not home so we went to visit a member in a nursing home. We
talked for 1/2 an hour and went contacting by Dunkin till the end of
the night. But this talk was my 10th one given in sacrament meeting.
#publicspeaking
See if you can guess the theme for the quotes this week:) Not too hard
though. Next week might be a little more difficult.
So John is doing well. Came to church and is keeping commitments we
have extended. Just trying to prepare him as much as we can for
baptism. Jay still meets with us and we talk about all sorts of things
with him. Usually General Conference talks we invite him to read or
scriptures he doesn't understand. Adrian went to the temple last
Saturday so that is cool! Hill is doing well too. Helping her prepare
a name to take to the temple but we are not sure when we will go. And
now working with another less active named James Staiti. He is really
cool and is great to meet with. Robert is also doing well. He leave
Ina. Few weeks for military training and he is excited for it. But he
will be gone for a month so... Yeah.
Well love you all and I will see you in the next email. Bu-bye!!!

sometime.

Bu-bye!!!

Week #23 Letter
Hello everyone! How are you? I'm doing good. Pretty good week this
week. Nothing to crazy happened except Adrian got the priesthood!!! I
can remember the day he first walked in and wanted to learn more. So
long ago but only 3 months ago. He has come a long way. Anyways,
summaries of the day 21!
2-29-16
"We stole the Statue of Liberty...The small one from Las Vegas."
"Aaww"
Preparation day! It went by so fast it felt faster than usual. But
then again, we did end at 4:30 today. That makes it shorter. We had
our studies and laundry. Went and looked around some stores until we
went to GNC. Elder Mitchell got some protein and a blender. The
blender was super cheap and making me consider getting one if at
actually works. Then went and got our groceries for the month. We got
a little more than we need for this week so we are good for the next 3
weeks basically. Plenty of food. Then went to the church and played
some ping pong and emailed until 4:30 when we left for a dinner
appointment at 5. I finally beat Elder Householder in a match of ping
pong. He has beaten me every week we've played each other and finally
I beat him. Then at the dinner appointment, we did the family home
evening first and then ate dinner. It was a good lesson. Shared it
mostly with their daughter who doesn't like to come to church. Trying
to help her. Then afterwards, we went back to the church and John
cancelled on us too so we met with Adrian. We talked about the law of
chastity, word of wisdom, law of tithing, and law of the fast. Super
basic lesson. But good. Then came home. Fun day and it went fast!
3-1-16
"Cookie robots. I said cookie robots. Why, why, are you so old?" I'm
tired. It was a long day. We had some seed planting in the morning,
and a lesson with Jay afterwards. Pretty good lesson. Not too bad but
not the best. Lunch and then district meeting. That was pretty fun:)
then went to a lesson with Robert and that was good. Went over the
Restoration with him and added priesthood and auxiliary callings to
it. Also talked about service with him. Then went home, had dinner,
and went knocking in Whitestone. Planted a lot of seeds up there and
some said we could come back. We went to visit a member up there too
and they had this crazy dog. It is a baby apparently but it looked
full grown. It was so excited that it would jump on us every moment it
had. They put it on a leash and it has a choke collar on and it
sounded like it was hyperventilating when it was on the leash. It
would not settle down and was super distracting for our discussion
with the member. Ended up leaving after 20 min of this and the dog
jumping around making a ton of noise with nothing accomplished really.
Went back and contacted by Dunkin till we went in. I'm tired.
3-2-16
"Ugh, I hate that guy." To start off, my back has been hurting for a
few days now. I can't tell if it is from a lot of walking, a knot that
has built up or if something is wrong. But it has been getting worse
and very uncomfortable. So we'll see if it worsens and if it does much
more, I'll talk to the nurse. Anyways, today was interesting. We
started off usual, seed planting and met with Hill this morning. Just
talked about fasting. Then went to visit a member in a nursing home as
she asked for a blessing and she invited us for lunch... We get there
and she says we missed lunch but she still wants the blessing. As we
got the oil out and were about to do it, she says that she needs to go
and that we need to do it tomorrow and that way we can have lunch...
We tried to explain it will be quick but she wasn't having it. We then
left and planned to come back tomorrow... for lunch too. Then we went
and ate lunch, and went to the church to make calls and figure out how
to best teach family history to Adrian and Hill. We met with the new
branch president to discuss member missionary involvement, branch
mission plan, and any families he wants us to visit. He then asked me
to give a talk next Sunday in sacrament meeting on Temples to
encourage members to go to the temple. Pretty cool as this will be my
first in field talk and it also shows how much the new president
trusts us already:) it's awesome. Then we had dinner and went to do
some look ups down the street a little bit from the church. No luck so
we came home and contacted by Dunkin till 9.
3-3-16
"I shrink the moon. I grab the moon. I sit on the toilet, wait, what?"
Today was a good day. We did the usual morning with studies, seed
planting by Dunkin, and calls. But we went to visit the member from
yesterday and we gave her a blessing and talked for 20 min today. She
didn't want to talk anymore because she wanted us to go out and find
souls to save. We're like, "ok, we're going!" But we went to eat lunch
first and do our weekly planning session. The funny part about the
weekly planning was when we were planning for John, he called us on
skype... He wanted to confirm plans for tomorrow's lesson and let us
know his situation with it. Might be later or on time he said. But
weird how he called on skype and not the phone. Anyways, after weekly
planning, we went to visit a referral that requested a bible but no
one answered. So we knocked the street and went to eat dinner. Went
and did some look ups on Northern Blvd and ended up talking to a few
very drunk Spanish people. We could smell it on them and see it by the
way they walked they were drunk. So sad. And they wouldn't leave us
alone, every single one of them tried to talk to us about the most
random things ever. We just said we had to go visit someone and they
were ok with that. Not many of the look ups answered or didn't live
there anymore. That p's the usual with the look ups. Went and made a
few calls for the last few minutes and we were able to contact a
Japanese referral we received and set up a lesson for next Friday!
Pretty cool! His name is Yuki. Pretty good day after all. Back still a
little sore but changing the shoulders for the shoulder bag helped and
trying to massage it out. I got to say, I'm never wearing shoulder
bags again after the mission. It's going to be backpacks for
everything and not shoulder bags or messenger bags or satchels.
Whatever you want to call it, no more for me. I did get some good news
today though, I get to go on my 6 month anniversary temple trip on
March 16!!! Already to my first of 4 temple trips. We get one every 6
months and I'm almost a quarter of the way done with my mission! That
went fast.
3-4-16
"It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!" Pretty cold day today. Woke up to snow
on the ground and I thought why? I thought we were done with this snow
thing! Anyways, that put a damper on our Dunkin contacting as we only
got 2 in a half an hour so we went to make calls as no one was talking
to us. Had lunch and did some look ups down in Pomonok housing by
Queens College. We looked up this less active named James Staiti and
he was home. He invited us in and immediately said he would come back
to church next week, start living the word of wisdom again and agreed
to meet with us Monday. All it took was meeting him for the very first
time and he was willing to change his life again to come back to
church. He gave his history in the church and his current position in
the priesthood. Obviously we were meant to find this brother and bring
him back. We will meet with him Monday! Then we did the rest of our
look ups and no success but we did meet with Robert. Very good lesson
on patience and humility. Then went to Pizza Hut for dinner and had
another skype lesson with John. It was a good lesson on prayer. Then
had coordination meeting and exchanged with the Spanish elders. I'm
with Elder Cisneros for the next 24 hours! Gonna be fun:) I am
starting to love exchanges now:) I used to not like them as I wasn't
in my apartment usually with my stuff but I'm now like whatever, I'll
see it tomorrow.
3-5-16
"No annoying sounds."
"Does this count as annoying? *click bop bop click bop*"
"Very."
The exchange was super fun! But the studies not so much as it was 4
hours long... We had personal study, companionship, 12 week, and
language study. I got to live the life of a trainer for a day and it
was pretty fun. It really tests my knowledge on how to teach and
effective ways of teaching. But I'm good with just my 2 hours of
studies. Then had lunch and were out the door by 1 pm. Already like
half the day has gone by. We went to visit a recent convert named
Vince. He was baptized last November. He is preparing to go to the
temple next Saturday and we were thinking of taking Adrian then too.
But that means preparation day would be Saturday and not Monday like
usual... I didn't tell anyone that so Monday I might get some emails
asking what is going on and I won't be able to respond till Saturday.
Then I have my temple trip next week and preparation day will be that
Wednesday. These next 2 weeks will be very unusual weeks. Anyways,
after that lesson, we went to a less active family named Camacho. We
did some service and helped hang up paintings and wrap telephone wire
around a door frame so she doesn't trip over the wire any more. Then
they fed us this vegetable soup that was super bland. No good flavor
at all to it. We were choking it down and eating salad to wash out the
taste. Ugh. The joys of everyone wanting to feed you. Afterwards, we
went and got dinner at Wendy's:) I haven't had it in forever and we
were both craving a frosty. Ate and went to visit a referral that
asked for a bible but we couldn't find his home and couldn't get a
hold of him so we went back to the church and waited for the others
elders to finish their lesson with Adrian to hold exchange review.
Then went home as we are all super tired. Elder Cisneros and I stayed
up till 12 last night talking.
3-6-16
"What? It has been disintegrated. By definition, it cannot be fixed."
It was church today and it was good. It was also fast Sunday and that
was difficult as I woke up today and realized that just as I was about
to go eat. Ugh, but then went back in bed and listened to music till
elder Mitchell was done taking a shower. Had studies and still
preparing for my talk next Sunday. So much to study from. Then went
and planted seeds at Dunkin until branch council. Then had church and
we taught the gospel principles class today on the creation. Then
Adrian got the aaronic priesthood during priesthood today! He has come
so far!!! I remember the day he walked into the church wanting to
learn more and now he has the priesthood power. And this Saturday he
is going to the temple. After church, we had a quick snack and did
some look ups but no one answered then contacted till dinner at
Hermano Sanchez's home and they made Spanish food. Super good. Then
contacted at Dunkin again till the end of the night. We will see if
elder Mitchell and I go to the temple with Adrian this Saturday as it
is now a branch temple trip and missionaries aren't supposed to go to
the temple when the branch goes. It was just going to be Vince
(Spanish elder's recent convert) and Adrian and us missionaries but
now it is a branch activity. So we probably won't go but they will
have a great time nonetheless.
So Adrian has come a long way. Almost done teaching him, got the
priesthood, and is going to the temple this Saturday. He is almost out
of our hands. Hill is a little behind him now and just needs to find a
family name to take to the temple. Then she will go. John is moving
this week so he asked us to help him tear up his carpet Tuesday and
then we will teach him. He is progressing well and is preparing for
baptism on the 27th. Then we found James Staiti this past week who is
a less active. Gonna start working with him now. Hopefully he doesn't
drop us.
Well, not going with Adrian to the temple as missionaries can only go
once a month and I have my anniversary temple trip the very next week.
